1. Traffic Lights Travel around the space using different actions to suit the commands. Red: Stop and freeze Green: Gentle jogging or any other actions Amber: Pogo Jumping or any other actions Belisha beacon: Tall pin shape on feet Zebra crossing: Tall pin shape on the floor Footbridge: Front support
2. Gears Move around the space using any travel actions. This warm up is to show changes in speed. 1 Walk 2 Fast walk 3 Slow jog 4 Run 5 Run quickly
Chose actions that may be used later in the lesson Add ‘close the box’ Here the teacher uses the arms to confine the space the children move in
3. ‘Beep beep’ Tell a story about going on a journey in a car. Include; Gears Bumpy road Reverse down a narrow lane Parking in a space Putting on a handbrake Overtaking Say ‘beep beep’ when you meet another ‘car’ to avoid collision
4. Beans Travel around the space. Teacher calls out commands Runner: running Frozen: Still, strong shape Jumping: Pogo Jumping Chilli: Rubbing body Jelly: Shaking whole body French/String: Hands above head/walk on tiptoe/say oh la la! Baked beans: Small body shape on floor Has-beens!: bent over like an old man!
5. DVD Game Travel around in the space Play: Walk Stop: Still Fast Forward: Run Rewind: Walk backwards Eject: Crouch down and jump up Record: Sit on floor on bottom and spin
6. Mr Men Game Travel around the space. Teacher calls out Mr Men Mr Tall: Move on tiptoe Miss Small: Move close to the ground Mr Slow: Move as slowly as possible Mr Strong: Strong still poses Miss Jelly: Move and wobble

7. Musical Statues Consider how you want the children to travel
8. Sticky Parts Travel in and out of space. How? When the teacher calls out part/parts of the body stick them to the floor and freeze Variation: Join up with others and stick said part/parts together
9. Alphabet Game Can be played alone or with a partner. Travel and when letter is called out make that letter with body/bodies
10. Follow the leader Change over frequently. Play Trains and tunnels to change over
12. Stuck in the mud Use a dance type action to release: Turn and jump,
13. Wizards and Rocks As stuck in the mud. When caught, make a still small shape near the floor, another must run around the ‘rock’ twice to release

Touch your head and stand up tall Turn around and sit on the floor Touch your knees and curl up small Spin around and lie on the floor
Stand up tall Then crouch down small Stand on tiptoes While you touch your nose Slap your thigh Hands up high Turn around and sit on the ground

What can you do to help children use space better? |

Ask them to draw a squiggly snake in the air. Draw the same shape on the floor. Now follow that pathway with your feet. Pretend to paint soles of feet. You are looking for imaginary curved pathways left by the snakes
Draw the first letter of name in the air and on the ground. Now follow that pathway when travelling
Warming up in a circle formation Use movements and actions that you will introduce in the lesson At the start of the warm up, the pupils sit in long sitting with straight backs, good posture and pointed toes.
Progressions:
Sitting Tapping different body parts, clapping, waving, pointing, typing, mashed potato, stamping, and rotations of body parts, bottom shuffling, and arm actions in different directions
Standing As above and: Marching, pogo jumping, hopping, astride jumps, shaking whole body, Use different levels
Moving in/out/around Travel in low/out high, side steps. |
